April's Musings

Pillows, more than just fluff.

I remember growing up when pillows were something you had one of and it was on your bed. For the woman with a little interior decorating savvy, rock hard throw pillows in solid colors found themselves on the couch.

Times have indeed changed.

You know there are some things I prefer about the past but pillows and cushions are not one of them. Pillows have come a long way. They're softer, they're prettier; they are more personal and their shapes and sizes are abundant.

Pillows have a job to do. I have decided that pillows form an amazing support network. There's the pillow for the small of the back to ease the backache—square, about 16. There's the pillow to rest your arm on, while reading—oblong is good. There'’s the pillow to sit the laptop on—sort of a rectangle. There are the big bed pillows with soft cotton covers to prop you up in a chair posture, for mornings in bed with coffee and croissants. There's those huge body pillows that resemble the softness of a person in case you need a little loving (I sent my son to college with one of those: "pretend it's me" I said!). There's the pillow between the knees that works for backache, there's the animal shaped pillow in case you have dog allergies but really want a pet (mine's a giraffe) and there's the scented lavender pillow for aromatherapy, rather tiny, a whiff is perfect, and there's the "heat in the microwave pillow" for sore muscles, oh this one works for stiff necks too! There's a plump square pillow for under the ankles—swollen legs can rest. There just aren't enough pillows to make a pregnant woman comfortable. Doctors should prescribe pillow propping for expectant moms. And when baby arrives there's the "baby propping" pillows and also the "pillow as a barrier" for baby not to roll off mom and dad's bed. There is the pillow to hold for comfort—a little squeeze can chase the blues away.

Pillows are just so good!

Actually when you think about it, having the right pillows is just like having a live-in chiropractor, nurse and therapist—not bad for a little bit of fluff. And just imagine the double whammy impact if they are all pretty too!

I do love my pillows, do you?
