Just because winter is setting in, doesn’t mean that your yard should go unnoticed for months to come. There are thousands of feathered friends sitting in tree branches, searching for cold weather seed, and waiting to show you just how beautiful they are. Don’t forget about your backyard birds this holiday season. Here are a few easy ideas to add a little festivity to your yard as well as provide a tasty treat for winter birds.
For an easy project to do with kids (or yourself) gather a dozen or so pinecones. Coat the pinecones with peanut butter and then roll in birdseed. When you have covered the pinecones, tie a red bow and a piece of pine to the tops. Hang the pinecones into a tree. The ornaments are pretty as well as a delectable treat.
Although Cardinals prefer sunflower seeds, tiny Chickadees and Nuthatches love suet! Similar to the idea behind the pine cone ornaments. You can also buy suet and simple wood or wire suet feeder frames and dress them up for the holidays. A red bow, piece of evergreen, sprig of holly, or dried flowers can be tied to the top and used to hook the feeder(s) into a tree.
For an already existing birdhouse in your yard. Hang evergreen swag on the feeder like a tiny cottage. Although, the birds may not appreciate the decorations themselves, any guests or relatives will notice the extra care you have taken in dressing up the outdoors around your home.
Be sure to take a moment to sip your steaming Sunday morning coffee while watching the whimsical birds dance among trees and feeders. They might just be singing songs of thanks as they dive into their holiday meals.
